Role of Important Government Organization in Power Sector

National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) :
  1. NTPC Limited was established in 1975 which is a premier Public Sector Enterprise.
  2. It is a world class integrated power major and its role is to develop power for India’s growth with increasing global presence.
  3. NTPC has an installed capacity of 27904 MW through 26 power stations.
  4. It includes the power stations under joint venture with states and private sector. It has power stations producing power which are coal, oil and gas based. Also it has its presence in hydro power, coal mining, oil and gas exploration, power distribution and trading.
  5. It also has plans to develop nuclear power plants.
  6. NTPC has planned to develop 50000 MW power by 2012 and 75000 MW by 2017. It has about 21% share of total installed capacity of the nation.
  7. The company has equity stake of about 45% for manufacturing of transformers in the Transformers & Electricals Kerala Lid (TELK).
  8. The company has also plans to set up and operate thermal power plants overseas. In this regard, they have already signed a MoU with Nigeria and Srilanka.
  9. At present, it has hydropower development of 1920 MW capacity.
  10. Its subsidiary company NTPC Hydro Ltd has planned to set up 4791 MW of small hydro projects in various places in the country.

Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) :

It’s function is to promote and finance rural electrification projects in the country. Some of the states have already achieved 100% rural electrification.

Nuclear Power Corporation (NPC) :
It was set up in 1987 for development of nuclear power in our country. It has set a target of 20000 MW power generation capacity upto 2025.
National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) :
It is responsible for planning, execution and operation of hydro-electric project with development of transmission lines.

Power Grid Corporation of India Itd (PGCIL) :
It is responsible for development and operation of electrical high voltage transmission system in our country.

State Electricity Boards (SEB’s) :
These boards in 18 states are responsible for generation, transmission and distribution of power in their respective states. Same function is performed by the respective corporations formed in the remaining states of Sikkim, Nagaland, Goa, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and all Union Territories.
In north-eastern states, the power projects are developed by North-Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) set up in 1976.
