Important Constituents of Steam Power Station and Layout
We will study in brief about the following :

For boilers we need clean and soft water. Use of such water increases their life. Water taken from river or any other source is stored in storage tanks. From the storage tanks it is pumped, purified and softened by chemicals and then delivered to boilers by means of feed water pumps.
(b) Control Room
Now-a-days remote controlled power plants are installed. In such plants control room is must. In control room all the measuring Instruments are provided for each panel of alternator and 3 PO feeder, synchronizing gear, protective gear, voltage regulators, communication system etc. In a separate battery room, a M.G. set or rectifier is also installed for supplying to make and break trip circuit of switch gear.
(c) Switch-yard
In the switch-yard the transformers, circuit breakers and switches are installed. It has lightning arrestor for the protection of the power station against lighting strokes, circuit breakers are protective devices.
The supply from alternators is taken to the bus-bars through transformers and circuit breakers of suitable ratings.
