Advantages and Disadvantages of Resistance Welding
Advantages of Resistance Welding :
The resistance welding has following advantages over the conventional welding :
- The welding time is extremely short, a few millisecond to a few seconds.
- Due to the use of controlled devices like thyristors precise heat control is possible to achieve.
- Quality of welding is improved to a great extent.
- With the technique of energy storage weiding the fluctuations in the ac supply voltage are reduced to a great extent.
- There are no surface deformities at the region of weld.
- By the choice of suitable electrodes it is possible to have different welding arrangements like spot, projection butt or seam welding.
- The welding process is cleaner than the conventional welding process.
- It is better than brazing or soldering.
Disadvantages of Resistance Welding :
The disadvantages of Resistance Welding are as follows :
- Due to the sudden switching of high currents, the resistance welding can produce an appreciable amount of RF interference to the neighbouring electronic circuits.
- Due to the losses taking place in the welding transformer the efficiency reduces.
- The control is complex and costly.
- In the capacitive energy storage system it is necessary to use a capacitor bank. These capacitors are high voltage capacitors which are very costly. This will increase the cost and the size of the system.
