Basic Concept of Hydro-Power Generation
- Generating stations are the energy conversion power stations.
- In hydro electric power station a large quantity of water is stored in dams.
- Thus, there is a potential energy. The stored water from the high head is carried down by penstocks (pipes) to lower heads up to water turbine.
- This system converts potential energy into kinetic energy which is utilized to drive water turbines converting it into mechanical energy, which is utilized to drive the generator converting mechanical energy into electrical energy.
