Constructional Parts and Working of Auto-Transformer

Construction of Autotransformer

AutoTransformer

Main parts of Auto transformer
   1. Core
   2. Winding
   3. Wheel (Handle)
   4. Brush
   5. Outer
   6. Terminal box.

  1. Core : Core is made of best quality silicon steel stampings assembled to form circular (cylindrical shape).
  2. Winding : Super enamelled copper wire of high grade copper wound on core and input output terminals are taken out on the terminal box.
  3. Wheel (handle) : A round wheel which moves the brush on the winding to select number of turns on secondary side to get desired voltage.
  4. Brush : A carbon brush can be moved on the winding. One electric connection with the winding to select number of turns on secondary side as desired.
  5. Outter cover (Box) : Complete assembly of core, winding, brush are housed in the outer cover to protect these parts.
  6. Terminal Box : Two terminals of primary and two of secondary are brought out on terminal box to connect supply to primary and load to secondary.

Working of Autotransformer

  • Working principle is same as that of the regular two winding transformer i.e. electromagnetic induction we noted in it that voltage per turn is same. So selecting proper number of turns we can get the desired voltage.
  • With the help of wheel and brush we can select definite number of turns on secondary to get the desired voltage secondary voltage a number of turns (N2).
  • Constructional diagram and symbolic diagram of autotransformer is shown in Figure.
