Conventional Lightning Protection System

Conventional Lightning Protection System

  • There are various conventional or principle provide protection against components to conventional lightning strokes.

(A) Air Termination Network

  • The primary function of termination network, is to arrest the an air terminal or air lightning strike to a preferred point, so as to make sure that the discharge current can be safely concentrated via the down conductors to the devoted earthing system

(B) Down Conductors

  • The of providing down conductor is to offer a low impedance path from the air termination to the earthing system so that the lightning current can be safely grounded without the development of excessively large voltages.
  • Down conductor path should be as direct as reason possible to earth, avoiding sharp bends or turns so as to diminish the risk of side- flashing where impedance / inductance is increased under impulse conditions.
(C) Earthing System
  • Each conductor should have a separate earthing system with condition made for the detachment of each conductor from the earthing system for testing purposes.
  • The resistance to earth for lightning protection at any point should measure at any point should always be less than 100, this is with reference with International Standards.
  • It is suggested that all the independent lightning earths to be linked together to minimize the earth voltage potential rise.
(D) Linking to Avoid Side-Flashing
  • It is recommended that all the metal parts such as cladding, handrails, water pipes, metal roofs, gas pipes, ACs, etc should be linked to the lightning protection systems.
