Dependence of Power Coefficient, Cp on Tip Speed Ratio, λ
The dependence of power coefficient on tip speed ratio is typically shown in Figure for various types of turbine rotors. Following points can be observed from the graph.
- Each type of wind mill has some optimum tip speed to wind speed ratio, λ at which it gives maximum Cp.
- Cp is lowest for Savonius and Dutch type of blades.
- Cp is maximum for propeller type of blades. It gives Cp of about 0.45 at tip speed ratio of about 6.
- Ideal value of C , is about 0.59 representing the maximum theoretical efficiency of a wind turbine. All wind machines have Cp lower than the maximum value.
