Dependence of Power Coefficient Cp on Tip Speed Ratio, λ

The dependence of power coefficient on tip speed ratio is typically shown in Figure for various types of turbine rotors. Following points can be observed from the graph.
  1.  Each type of wind mill has some optimum tip speed to wind speed ratio, λ at which it gives maximum Cp.
  2. Cp is lowest for Savonius and Dutch type of blades.
  3. Cp is maximum for propeller type of blades. It gives Cof about 0.45 at tip speed ratio of about 6.
  4. Ideal value of C , is about 0.59 representing the maximum theoretical efficiency of a wind turbine. All wind machines have Clower than the maximum value.
