Dual Converters

Dual Converters

Q. What is a dual converter?

Q. Why a dual converter is called so?

Q. Introduction of Single Phase Dual Converter

Q. Block Diagram of Dual Converters

Definition of Dual Converters :

  • When two full converters (single phase or three phase) are connected back to back the configuration is known as dual converter configuration.

Block Diagram of Dual Converters :

  • The block diagram of a dual converter is as shown in Figure A.
  •  Due to the back to back connection of the two full converters, both the load voltage and current at the output terminals become reversible, and therefore the system provides four quadrant operation.
  • The dual converters are therefore used for the reversible dc drives.
  • The dual converters are normally used for high power dc drives, with power levels in the megawatt range, for speed control in both the direction.
  • In this section the principle of operation of ideal and non ideal dual converters with and without the circulating current has been discussed in detail.
  • The concept of Dual Mode Dual Converter has been explained and the application of dual converter in the reversible dc motor drives has been illustrated.
