Lightning Arrester for Railway Systems and Voltage Limiter

Lightning Arrester for Traction Systems

1. DC Traction Arrester
2. Track Side Arrester
3. AC Surge Arrester
4. Low Voltage Limiter

5. Enhanced Voltage Limiter

  • This is installed in between the current return path and the structures lying alongside to the rails, such as telecommunication, signalling and electrical equipment.
  • In case of over voltages, enhanced voltage limiter generates a durable conductive path between the overloaded area and the substation.
  • This will result in the increasing load currents at the substation which are sensed and tripped with the help of the protective devices, which protects the personnel and the devices.

6. Sheath Voltage Limiter

  • This is an over voltage protection device designed to limit induced voltages in conductive cable sheaths derived from parallel running, transmission lines as a function of normal operating conditions and any superimposed voltage as from the lightning strikes.
  • By limiting the over-voltages to safe levels, the inevitable breakdown of insulating cable sheaths can be avoided and these limiters are often mounted within link boxes at cable junctions or critical locations.

7. Rail Track side Module

  • It is an overvoltage protection device designed to protect trackside functional modules and associated equipment against the damaging effects of switching and lightning.
  • Typical applications include the protection of signals, pinots, level crossings and equipment at all critical locations along the line.
  • Trails have proved conclusively that the use of this will extend the service life of trackside modules and reduce failure rates during lightning storms.
  • The surges occurs in the electric locomotives are broadly classified in two different ways :
  1. Direct Lightening Strokes.
  2. Switching Surges due to External and Internal factors.
