Objectives of Vapour Power Cycles

1. The prime objective in engineering practice is the conversion of energy from one form to another.
2. With the growing civilization and higher standard of living, one of the important aspect of this is the generation of mechanical or electrical power.
3. Important power producing devices are steam power plants, gas turbine power plants and I.C. engine power plants.
4. Latest power producing devices under development are fuel cells, thermo-electric, geothermal and wind energy power plants.
5. The thermodynamic cycles using vapour as working substance are called vapour power cycles. 
6. Most commonly used vapour is steam and the power plants using steam as working substance are called steam power plants.
7. Firstly, the idealized vapour power cycles will be dealt with by taking into consideration the thermodynamic principles and the principle of operation of the cycle. Later, we shall discuss the actual vapour power cycles.
