Working of Shell Type Transformer and Construction

Shell Type Transformer
Q. Explain working of shell type transformer.

  • In this type of transformer core covers the larger portion of windings. As shown in Figure windings are wound on central portion of the limb, which carries total flux while the side limbs completes the flux path and carry half.
In this high voltage and low voltage windings are divided into number of coils and are placed alternatively. This type of winding is called the total flux. as sandwich winding.
  • This type of construction achieves mechanical robustness as coils are more readily braced.
  • Also under short circuit conditions winding in a shell type transformer withstand forces to a greater extent compare to core type transformer because windings are supported by the core over larger portion of length.
  • Due to sandwich coils leakage reactance is reduced. As the core is exposed, better cooling is achieved in core than winding.
