Salient Features of Electric Generators Used in Large Wind Power Plants

Various generators are used to suit the particular type of wind plant.
Generators are driven by rotor of turbine which is directly connected to the generator shaft.

  1. Squirrel cage Induction generator (SCIG) is very simple in construction. It is connected through gear box to turbine.
  2. Wound rotor doubly fed Induction generator (DFIG) : It is suitable for high power application.
  3. Wound rotor synchronous generator (WRSG) : It has separate rotor winding for field system and it is excited by D.C. source.
  4. Permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) : Generator losses are minimum. Permanent magnet costs much more. Power factor of the machine is not controllable.

Generator performance is improved by different provisions such as :

  1. Yaw control : Helps in continuous adjusting the position in the direction of wind.
  2. Pitch control : It changes blade positions with respect to wind speed.
  3. Stall control : It helps in stalling the blades when wind speed increases .They operate in safety limits.
