Q. What is Vacuum ?

Breakdown In Vacuum

The vacuum system is used to create and maintain pressure much below the atmospheric pressure. In vacuum system the pressure is always measured in terms of mm of Hg where standards atmosphere is equal to 760 mm of Hg at temperature of 0C.

mm of Hg = torr

Vacuum may be classified as,

  1. High vacuum : 1 x 10-3 to 1 x 10-6 torr (for all electrical insulation purpose this range is preferred.)
  2. Very High Vacuum : 1 x 10-6 to 1 x 10-8 torr
  3. Ultra High Vacuum : 1 x 10-9  torr and below
