Dependence of Solidity, γ on Tip Speed Ratio λ

Dependence of Solidity, γ on Tip Speed Ratio λ

The variation of solidity, γ versus the tip speed ratio, λ  is shown in Figure B.

Following points can be observed :

  1. Rotor with high tip speed ratio have low value of solidity. Rotors turn at high speed.
  2. Rotor with low tip speed ratio have high value of solidity and they turn at low speed.

The design of rotors can be based for 0.6 a specific performance by interacting the characteristic curves represented in Figure A and Figure B.

The torque generated by propeller and Darrieus type of rotors is low due to which these are suitable for electric power generation. While the torque generated by multi bladed type and savonius type rotors is high thus they are suitable for applications like pumping of water.
