  • Many insulating materials used in high voltage insulation system are formed with different layers of various insulating materials. Different materials have different permittivities. e.g. Bakelite sheets or mica sheets or materials used in transformers. The necessity of using such a material is
  1. Different layers are used to control electric stresses.
  2. They are mechanically strong as compared to liquid and gases and can give supports to conductors.

But use of such dielectric materials can have drawbacks like

(a) Only restricted methods are available for field calculations in multidielectric materials.
(b) Such materials can produce dangerous effects.
(c) Adequate solutions for calculating field distribution are only possible by numerical computations or experimental field plotting techniques.
