Necessity of Ash Disposal in Thermal Power Plant

Necessity of Ash Disposal

Necessity of Ash Disposal

In central power stations a very large quantity of ash is produced which is about 10 to 20% of coal burnt per day. It is necessary to provide some means to remove this ash and disposed off at a sufficient distance from the site of power plant for the following reason :

  1. Ash is dust, hence it is imitating and annoying to handle in general and particularly to eyes.
  2. It forms clinkers by fusing together in large lamps which must be broken before given to any conveying equipment.
  3. Ash is hot when it comes out of the furnace, therefore its quenching is necessary.
  4. Ash is abrasive, therefore, it will wear all the conveyor parts in contact with it in case there is a relative motion.
  5. It produces corrosive acids when mixed with water.
