Selection of Site for Nuclear Power Station

Selection of Site for Nuclear Power Station

Following factors should be taken into consideration while deciding the site for nuclear power plant:

  1. Proximity to the load centre : The plant should be close to the load centre so that transmission losses are minimized . But at the same time it should be away from populated area because of safety reasons. Of course safety is the prime most priority. So a compromise is necessary.
  2. Availability of water : Ample amount of water is required for cooling purpose and for make-up water requirement. So the plant should be located near a river or lake.
  3. Transportation facilities : Adequate facilities should be available to transport heavy machinery during erection work, carrying fuel, carrying nuclear waste etc.
  4. Radioactive waste disposal : The waste from nuclear power plant is highly radioactive. So proper waste disposal arrangements have to be present.
  5. Distance from populated areas : There is always a danger of radiation/radioactivity in the vicinity of nuclear power plant. Even though high safety standards are maintained, accidents do and can happen. Hence, the nuclear power plant should be located away from the populated area.
