Advantages, Disadvantages and Applications of Solid State Regulator

Advantages of Solid State Regulator :

  1. Due to the incorporation of firing angle control, the output voltage regulation is better than that of the tap changing regulator.
  2. Its dynamic response is faster than that of the tap changing regulator.

Disadvantages of Solid State Regulator :

  1. Poor input power factor due to the use of phase angle control.
  2. Output voltage waveform is distorted as shown in Figure. Therefore it is necessary to use filters at the output.
  3. The input current waveform also is distorted, so the circuit draws a large reactive power at increased values of “a”. To compensate for this a large capacitive input filter is required to be used.
  4. It is costly as compared to tap changing regulator.
  5. Due to the use of transformer the efficiency is low, about 70%

Applications of Solid State Regulator :

For the expensive home appliances such as TV, Refrigerators etc.
