Introduction to Types of Power Plants

  1. Power plays an important role in the working of men whether it is in industry. agriculture, transportation, human comfort etc.
  2. The per capita consumption of electrical power reflects on the living standards and prosperity of a nation.
  3. Any lack of energy will hamper the economic progress of the country.
  4. The development work for power generation has to be carried on since the energy requirements are increasing many folds over the last few decades and our country is no exception.
  5. India also has to utilise its natural resources to the maximum extent possible and it has to find new and efficient ways for producing power.
  6. The various sources of energy available are coal, water, petroleum products, natural gas and nuclear energy. Other non-conventional energy sources which are under development are solar, wind, tidal and geothermal energies.

We shall only study the following types of conventional power plants in brief :

  1. Steam power plants
  2. Diesel power plants
  3. Gas turbine power plants
  4. Hydraulic power plants
  5. Nuclear power plants
