Introduction to Types of Power Plants
- Power plays an important role in the working of men whether it is in industry. agriculture, transportation, human comfort etc.
- The per capita consumption of electrical power reflects on the living standards and prosperity of a nation.
- Any lack of energy will hamper the economic progress of the country.
- The development work for power generation has to be carried on since the energy requirements are increasing many folds over the last few decades and our country is no exception.
- India also has to utilise its natural resources to the maximum extent possible and it has to find new and efficient ways for producing power.
- The various sources of energy available are coal, water, petroleum products, natural gas and nuclear energy. Other non-conventional energy sources which are under development are solar, wind, tidal and geothermal energies.
We shall only study the following types of conventional power plants in brief :
- Steam power plants
- Diesel power plants
- Gas turbine power plants
- Hydraulic power plants
- Nuclear power plants
